So as the 17 of you who read regularly have probably noticed, I like to sprinkle these pages/posts with a few political notes or commentaries. Why, you might ask?
Well, there are a few reasons. First off, my wife doesn’t much like talking politics, so I get to “talk” with the internets. But that’s not the main reason. I think that what’s happening in the larger political sphere is just as important to my life and my boy’s life and future as what is happening in our own little sphere here. Sure, these things may not touch him directly, or they may take 20 years to do so, but they will and do have an impact. Having Obama in the White House? It’s HUGE for my son. He talks often about how he’s breaking stereotypes, about how it is wonderful to have “a person with brown skin” as the president, and how occasionally he wishes it had been Hillary since there has “never been a woman president, and that’s not fair at all!” So it matters in terms of the role models that he sees — people breaking out of the mold, following their hearts in spite of the naysayers.
And as politics increasingly both benefit and impinge on the LGBT community, I think it is of great importance to consider the effects on our own little family. To share those effects with others so they can see the human face on these issues. And to also consider what these political moves may mean for me, my LAWFUL wife, my boy, whatever his identity may be as he grows.
Hence the political asides. And though they are not true asides, they sometimes feel like such, so I felt the need for a little explanation.
Thanks for reading and believing.
